The heir to the late night throne
This whole thing with Jay Leno and the tonight show is pretty dumb.
Jay wants to retire. NBC signs conan to take his place. Time passes, and now it’s time for jay to retire and Conan to take over.
Jay decides that he doesn’t want to retire after all, and so now is getting his own show, the Jay Leno Show, at 9PM Monday through Friday.
On top of that, leno gets to keep the tonight show studio and a brand new studio is being built for conan.
Fact: Letterman became the real king of late night once Carson retired, but Conan o’brien may now be the funniest guy on network television. If they leave Leno on the air every night (which is horseshit anyway) and still make Conan change his style and who he is to try and appeal to the older tonight show crowd, then we will be blessed with both a prime time talk show and a late night talk show that are not funny at all.
I also have a bad feeling that Jimmy Fallon’s show (in Conan’s old time slot) could go either way… If everything goes right we could have a trifecta of unfunny talk shows on NBC five nights a week!
