a few weeks ago, laura bought herself this really nice digital camcorder, to the tune of somewhere around a grand. we’ve been playing with it alot, taking it to grants farm, the zoo, and even planning on bootlegging a concert or two with it. not ENTIRELY relevant to this story, but whatever.
so anyway, about a week and a half ago my gentle giant of a dog found a baby rabbits nest in my yard. there were five of them, but one of them was injured pretty badly from something.
we were instantly concerned that the mother would abandon them since laura, myself, my dog, and my family had been playing with them, but thankfully the mother rabbit came back to keep feeding them.
over the course of the next week, two of the five died – the injured rabbit, and another that looked like it just got out of the nest and couldn’t find it’s way back.
all was good until a few days ago when it rained REALLY hard here. laura and i were out pissing money away on stupid things when, on the way back home, it hit me that the bunnies might need to be checked on. we went out there, and sure enough, the nest was absolutely flooded, and the bunnies were treading water trying to stay afloat.
so we brought them inside for the night, wrapped them in a warm towel, and kept them in the box that my dvd burner came in. the next morning, the rain had stopped and the nest was no longer flooded, so i moved them back outside and the mother came back to feed them during the day.
i came home from work, and the remaining three were cool. they were warm, plump, active, and looked like they had been well cared for. i stopped worrying about them, but continued to check up on them daily.
a morning or two later, i came out to the nest to find it completely empty, with a rock shoved into it, and i immedieatly feared the worst and began looking for little baby bunnies in the yard. i found two of them – on of them was fine, but spooked, a few feet from the nest. the other was badly injured, with two open and bleeding wounds, which were caused (without a doubt) by my neighbor’s stupid fucking cat that roams the neighborhood (that’s another rant entirely, i’ll save it for later).
i was never able to find the other bunny – i can only assume that the cat killed it and took it back to it’s ‘house.’ i cleaned up the injured guy, stopped his bleeding with the stuff in my hedgehog first aid stash, and loaded both of them back into the box. i took them out to the wildlife shelter and rehabilitation center, where they are to this day, and hopefully they are still alive – things didn’t look good for the injured bunny, and the survival rate for cottontail rabbit litters is extremely low in the first place.
i’m thinking about calling out there and seeing if they are still alive, but part of me would rather just assume they are fine and not know the truth. i felt responsible for them (they were MY bunnies), and i almost think i’d rather be disallusioned and think that they’re fine than call and fine out that they died.
that’s my story. i was upset for a while, but i feel a little better about it now.
here’s some video we took with the new camera (see, there was a reason i talked about the camera after all.)
the links are down, if you really want to see them let me know.
bunnies at night (14 megs)
bunnies during the day (16 megs)
and a random one…
the frog that we found in my yard (1.7 megs)
that frog one is just some video of the frog that we found in my yard. i just wanted to play with the night vision capabilities of the camera.
