a big fat WHAT THE HELL

i will not redesign my website again. i will not redesign my website again.

i have to keep telling myself that, because i’m really tempted to just go nuts and totally redesign everything from scratch.

but i dont have that kind of time and i have things i think i would rather do, so i just changed colors instead. ;)

anyhow, on to the ‘what the hell’ part. for the first time since i’ve been running this site, my host provides me with stats and raw access logs. these stats are incredibly detailed, and include what search engine keywords have brought visitors to my site. these are the most interesting, in order from most to least common:

devil went down to jamaica
pantala naga pampa meaning
make southpark characters
john bonham s death
fuck
how to do rubber balls vending machines
microsoft shit fuck asshole
woodduck productions

liscense plate lights
smoke pot get paid
tim reynolds nomadic wavelengths cd

pityriasis rosea pics
chris farley s life as a child

look at all the profanities on that list! guess that makes sense, though, considering i talk like a construction worker.

and what’s with all the death of / life of search hits? and ’smoke pot get paid?’ that’s crazy. i cant help but wonder what the hell search engines are finding on my site that matches these search keywords… i also think it’s really funny that “wood duck productions” and “lauren lavoie” are on that list.

funny shit.

upcoming technical problems

a word of warning,

i’m switching to a new server in the next 24 hours, and i’m anticipating MAJOR technical problems. i’ll try like hell to prevent them, but i’m prepared for the worst.

if you’ve got direct links to html files, they should still function. domain name and website structure is not changing at this point. but i dont know how greymatter will react, so i dont know exactly what to expect from switching everything over.

the new folks are offering me 4 gigs of server space and 20gb a month of transfer bandwidth for about $7 a month. considering that i pay $8 for 20mb and 1.5gb transfer, i’m sold.

see you all in the morning, hopefully… if not, stay tuned, i’ll get it up and running one way or another.

natural causes and greedy homeless guys

i heard about the death of nbc’s david bloom yesterday morning while i was getting ready for work. it makes me really sad that he died, i have mucho respect for him and i think he was one of the few remaining respectable journalists/news anchors left in the business. plus i just think he’s a cool guy.

there is something bizzarly ironic about going to the frontlines of war in iraq and dying from natural causes. i didn’t say it was funny ironic, just ironic.

on a completely unrelated note, i was at work yesterday when one of my employees told me there was some homeless looking guy digging through our dumpster looking for food, and that he asked her for food when she went out there. so, i went out there to see what was up. sure enough, there’s a guy out there wearing a pleather jacket, listening to his portable cd player, digging through our garbage. first thing he does when i walk out there is ask me for some food.

it should be noted that the only time in 6 years that i’ve ever given anything away at work was at the end of the day one day when some guy who looked like jesus came up and asked to spare him something if we were going to throw the leftovers out – how could i say no to jesus?

like i was saying, i’m usually wary about giving things away, because we’re not in the business of giving things away (seeing that our organization is a charity case in and of itself.) but we had a lot of leftover donuts and stuff from the breakfast program we do during spring, and they’re donated to us, so i didn’t see the problem with giving him a few.

so i have the girl who talked to him first bring him out a hot dog and a handful of donuts. she hands it to him, and he lookes at her like she’s crazy and says, “what, that’s it?!?”

so she gets angry, tells him to forget it, and snatched the food right back out of his hands. he wouldn’t leave, as if he was really expecting us to bring him more, so i called security and had them take care of it. when the security guard came down and asked him what he was doing, the guy said he was waiting here for some food. the guard told him that we already tried to give him some, and then the guy said we never offered him anything. so the guard asked him to leave, and the homeless guy called the guard “the devil.”

i don’t get it – what gives? how are you going to be so hungry that you’ll dig through someone’s trashcans, but when they offer you food you say “that’s it?!?!” and, you cant afford food, but you can afford a new-looking pleather jacket and a discman?

priorities, i guess. but i have a hard time feeling bad for someone who asks for help, gets offered help, and says “that’s it?!?”

blows me away.

two in a row

when it rains, it pours, i suppose – here i am posting for the second day in a row after a month and a half of silence.

so anyway, little jenkins (kelly) is going to the ‘roo this year. no biggie, really, since there’s only a handful of acts there this year that i’m really that interested in seeing anyway. so, no biggie. seems like more her scene anyway. i’m more of a hotel-room-and-showering kinda guy. ;)

i’ve been thinking of setting up an FTP server off of my computer, but i need to look into firewalls and stuff first. currently, my DSL modem has a built in firewall, so there’s no way for anyone to get into my computer, even if i want them to… i would have to disable that firewall, but then that leaves ALL of my ports open for anyone to get into. i’d need to look into a firewall program to block everything but the FTP port….. wait, wait. getting tech-geeked-out. nevermind.

speaking of getting geeked out, i pre-ordered final fantasy origins. it looks cool, and it’ll be nice to play one of the games that was never released here. looking forward to it – it’s out 4/9/03. also, due out in october is ‘celebrity deathmatch.’ that looks GREAT.

anyone else out there use stats4all.com for website visitor tracking? i’ve been using it for almost a year now, but i just got an email from them saying they were shutting down for everyone but the dutch. anyone have any alternatives? anyone have anything that isn’t dependent on another company? like a script or something to track visitors? sounds like something lauren would have. ;)

school’s cracking down and i’m about to get kicked in the ass by all of my classes, so expect to see me post alot more in an attempt to put off the inevitable.
