piece of crap computer”

peacock – is my site still messed up? i tweaked a couple of .css flags that might help, or might not do anything at all. i’d help you more if i could, but i’m knee deep in computer bullshit myself at the moment.

speaking of which, ryan, my pc is still messed up REAL bad. it’s nothing on my ide channels, i’ve tried running without all of it (save the hard drive) to no avail. THEN i tried replacing the hard drive (which i was looking to upgrade anyhow – good timing, eh?). nothing. same shit. and that’s about where i’m at now.

i’m thinking it’s one of three things, and i’ll explain why. 1) slowly dying motherboard. 2) dying video card / video card conflict 3) ram crapping out.

all you computer wise folks out there, here’s what’s happening, you tell me what YOU think:

hard locking. it’ll just freeze at random point. closing a window, opening outlook, typing a word document, playing a game, etc. i can turn the num lock and such on and off once it freezes, but no alt-ctrl-del or soft resetting.

motherboard problem? booting is hard. if it’s the first time that i turn the computer on after a while, it takes a couple tries as it will lock at the startup screen, it will lock at the windows spalsh screen, it will lock pretty much anywhere. it seems like as it “warms up” it makes it farther before it locks up (that is, each boot will get me a few more seconds before it locks.)

video card problem? anything graphic intense locks it after only a few seconds. any emulator or game will lock almost instantly, but trying to play a video clip or mpeg file will cause a hard freeze within 20 seconds or so 100% of the time.

lauren? ryan? peacock? any other computer-knowledgeable folks? i’m going to play with it some more today and see what i can come up with, but i’m definitely willing to hear some other opinions. post a comment if you’ve got any ideas.

back by popular demand”

now that there’s been 3 comments and 7 emails telling me to update, i figure it’s about time, eh?

anyhow.

so it’s tax time. the MINUTE my w2 came, i filed. when everything is said and done, i’ll get about $700 back this year. and it’s ALL (well, almost all) going on my credit card. i might keep a hundred bucks or so to piss away on something completely meaningless, but chances are it’s all paying off the charge.

this marks an important change for me. from this point out, i’m not spending money on anything major until my card is down to about $500. (please note that concert tickets do not count as “anything major,” and i’ll still be going to whatever shows i can hit.) i’ve got to get this taken care of, and i’ve got to start saving money so that i can eventually get out of this house.

getting out of this house might not be for a while. i’m slated to graduate in may ‘04, but i’m thinking about starting graduate school while i’m still at home… i don’t really know yet. i need to see if i can find a job with just my undergrad. i need to remain at least a little flexible, as i’m eventually going to have to move to columbia (missouri) while laura does vet school. i need to find a job there, too, i suppose.

on a different topic, spike is fitting in nicely. he knows who i am now, and while he’s still pretty shy, he’s getting better about coming out and being active when i’m around. he’s really small for a hedgehog, and he’s pretty skinny – i’d really like to fatten him up a little – but so far there’s been no fattening considering he runs upwards of 4 miles a night on his wheel. (no bullshit. hedgies run 3 to 5 miles a night.)

my computer has been jacked up lately. i’ve been having problems booting, and it’s been hard core locking up at weird random spots. i was thinking maybe a virus, but i don’t think that’s it anymore. i noticed that when it hangs, it’s trying to access a drive, so i was thinking maybe an IDE interface issue. but that’s not it either, because my burner wouldn’t be working if that was the case. i think i’m starting to see the problem… i think my internal zip drive (which has been unreliable since i’ve installed it) is finally crapping out. i’m going to take it out in a minute and hopefully my problems will be over.

we shall see.
